High-resolution Brillouin scattering is used to characterize the residual densified area left in the imprint of a Vickers indentation on a silicate glass surface. Assuming a linear relation between the measured Brillouin frequency shift of the longitudinal acoustic modes and the glass density, 3D residual densification maps are obtained. In view of identification of a constitutive law, the results show that $\mu$-Brillouin spectroscopy opens the way to a fully quantitative comparison of experimental data with predictions of mechanical models.
