Scaling of activation energies with cooperativity in glassy dynamics    [PDF]

Th. Bauer, P. Lunkenheimer, A. Loidl
In the present work, using detailed measurements of the third-order nonlinear dielectric susceptibility of four glass-forming liquids, we deduce the increase of the number of correlated molecules Ncorr and, hence, the growth of dynamic length scales when approaching the glass transition. Our results reveal that the temperature dependence of the apparent activation energy, deduced from the temperature-dependent relaxation times, directly scales with Ncorr(T). This represents an experimental proof of a time-honoured conception in glass physics explaining the non-canonical temperature development of glassy dynamics.
